Sneak Peek: Playroom Design

Sharing something fun with blog readers today… a look at the design plans for Kate’s playroom. 🥳

In case you’re a new reader, let me first back up and say this room is a new addition to our home. Late last year, we decided to finish out an attic space and turn it into a dedicated playroom. The project wrapped up towards the beginning of quarantine (praise be! 🙌🏻). Given the circumstances, I stopped sharing construction updates on Instagram in an effort to be mindful of everyones’ unique quarantine situation. Now that Texas is slowly opening things up again and we’re starting this transition back into a new - and hopefully temporary - normal, I’m sharing progress updates again. ❤️

The images above show the (mostly) empty room. It’s a great space, and we’re so happy with how it turned out. For the design, I’m once again working with the fabulous ladies at Heather Scott Home & Design.

To help guide things, I sent the Heather Scott team the below bullets to get started:

  • A stylish take on a rainbow and cloud “theme” - colorful, fun, and casual. 🌈⛅

  • Gender neutral (nothing too “girly”). 💙💗

  • Storage! For toys, books, and art supplies. 📚

  • An art station utilizing our existing table and bistro-style kid chairs + a bulletin board to display Kate’s art. 🎨

  • Small seating area for adults. 👩👨

  • Maximize open floor space for plenty of room to play. 🧸

Above are photos of fabric samples… the Heather Scott team sent 3 color options for the roman shade - blue, green, and yellow (green and yellow shown above). I narrowed it down to green and yellow. Ultimately, I chose the green because I like how it pulls out the green in the “confetti” Kate Spade bench cushion fabric. 💚 The blue was great too, but I have so much blue in the house already and wanted to do something different.

The pillows below will sit on top of the bench.

In keeping with the rainbow and clouds theme, we selected the adorable cloud wallpaper seen below. It will be on an accent wall vs. the entire room to save money in the budget.

After considering a few layout options, we ultimately landed on the one above. It provides plenty of storage - both open and closed - but still gives us lots of open floor space for toys and room for Kate to play. We don’t need much of a seating area for adults since 1) there’s a built-in bench already in the room and 2) our upstairs living room is immediately outside the playroom door.

Kate’s not quite into coloring yet, but she will be very soon! I knew I wanted to incorporate an art station into the room + have a designated place to display her creations. I bought this kid’s table + these coordinating French bistro style chairs from Serena & Lily a while back (during a sale - woot!). I loved them immediately because they match the set we have in our breakfast nook. Love a cohesive moment! 😍

The colorful rug seen above will help tie all the colors in the room together nicely, and I love the pop of yellow in the poufs. The blue chest will be used to store arts and craft supplies, and then of course we needed a bookshelf. It’s a mid-century style shelf and will be secured to the wall.

Finally, for toy storage, we went with this Ikea shelf and baskets seen above. I like that it’s low so Kate will be able to pull out (and eventually put back) whatever she wants to play with on her own. It also leaves room for artwork to hang above.

And above is the total look! I’m thrilled with the design plans and can’t wait to see it all come together here in the next several weeks. Of course, I’ll be sharing updates on Instagram along the way. Stay tuned. ❤️

XOXO,

Liz
