Family Room: Interior Design Plan and Furnishings

Today I’m sharing the interior design plan and furniture selections for our family room! As always, shout out to the fabulous ladies at Heather Scott Home and Design for their help putting my vision on paper. We actually finalized the selections and ordered some (but not all!) of the furniture you’ll see in this post back in March. Everything was set to be delivered this month, but unfortunately the sectional and two lounge chairs have been delayed until at least September (foam shortages are to blame). Which is disappointing, but such is life sometimes. If I’ve learned anything renovating and designing, it’s patience!

Before we get into the nitty gritty, here’s a link to a previous blog post where I talk about the construction elements in this space and share some before and in-progress photos. It might be helpful for context!

Let’s start with the layout. This room is huge, and because of that, there are 3 furniture zones. We’ve only ordered furnishings for the main seating area in the center of the room. We’re waiting (until a date yet to be determined) to order the rest. Basically everything you see along a wall in the schematic below hasn’t been ordered.

The family room will serve as a chill, cozy space for us to hang out. It’s where we’ll watch TV (center of the room), play cards and board games (top left corner), listen to records (via the piece along the back wall, in between the windows), and read/chat (chairs on the bottom). One caveat to this floor plan. I’m reconsidering the two chairs at the bottom. Instead, I may put a piano in that corner or look for a cool vintage piece with some height instead. I’m glad I waited to order everything because now that we’re in the home, I can see things a little more clearly. I’m free to change my mind!

Before we dive into furnishings, let me talk a little about the color scheme and overall vibe direction. The earthy green shade you see in the photo below will run throughout the home. I chose green as the main color because 1) I’m just loving it right now 2) It’s my favorite color (yes, I know my entire last home was blue, haha!) and 3) I want to play off the colors you see looking out the windows here… greens! One of the reasons we fell in love with this home is because it feels like you’re in a treehouse. The house is situated on a little over 2 acres, is surrounded by woods, and tucks into a hillside. There are lots of trees. It’s lovely. My goal is to carry the feeling of nature into the interior.

For this room, we went with a rosey pink (not too bright!) accent color that pairs nicely with our greens and neutrals. Which is perfect because located directly off the family room is our sunset terrace, so there will be lots of pink popping into the space through the windows most evenings.

As you can see by looking at the fabric selections above, everything’s very textural and nothing is too fussy. Even in the formal spaces, I want this house to have a casual and homey feeling to it. More casual than my last home. The house is grand, and I want to play that down. I want visitors to feel comfortable and at ease when they walk in. There will be a lot of warmth and wood tones + I’m doing my best to incorporate some vintage and antique pieces into the design. I’m leaning into the Mediterranean style of the home, but it will be my take on Mediterranean. There will be clean lines and bits of rustic warmth + it will have a classic edge to it. Think Tuscan villa but mixed w/ like California wine country style. Classic Mod-iterranean, maybe? I dn… I never know how to describe my style! Haha. Regardless, the ladies at Heather Scott Home are the perfect fit for the job.

The windows on the left wall will have drapes in the cross-cultural Zak+Fox “Khotan” fabric seen above (it’s so pretty in person!). To save money on fabric, the drapes won’t be functional. The smaller windows along the back wall will have functional roman shades in this same fabric.

The Loloi “Rosemarie” rug above will ground the space and has shades of sage and blush running throughout the pattern. The colors are perfect, and it’s a super affordable rug. The 10x14 size, which is what we ordered, is under $1,000.

Above is the main sectional. I love it! It’s super deep and plush. Because it’s so large, I like that it has clean lines. Its size will already make such a huge impact, so I think a bolder shape could have overwhelmed the eye.

Each of the three throw pillows for the sectional have a different texture and incorporate various shades of greens, grey, and our dusty pink accent.

Next, above are the two arm chairs that will round out the main seating area. Their more traditional shape is a fabulous juxtaposition to the clean lined sectional, imo. They’ll be covered in a neutral, striped fabric and will each have a green lumbar pillow. The adjustable height side table has a beautiful quartz top and black metal base. While it’s new, it reads vintage to me because of the industrial-style base. The coffee table is huge and has a reclaimed, grey wash finish. We’ll use the open shelving on the bottom for baskets that we’ll fill with blankets and probably kid toys, haha. Finally, the leather ottomans harken to the home’s existing baseboard and trim color, really rounding out the design and tying it all together.

The pine console table above will sit directly behind the sofa. During the remodel, we added a floor plug so we could incorporate lamp lighting into the design. The lamps are an aged iron, giving them an old-world feel. They’re also thin and dainty, so the iron doesn’t feel too heavy. I sort of wish this table had a bottom shelf to it for an added decor opportunity, but that’s not the end of the world.

And then even though we haven’t ordered the items in the two pictures below, I still want to share them because quite frankly… I’m obsessed with this seating area. It will function as a game table (a super elevated one, haha). The banquette will be covered in a cozy, dark green velvet (which isn’t as bright in person as the image below indicates). The throw pillow fabrics add fun texture and casualness to the settee. And that tulip table. Wow. The antique brass base is stunning, and the quartz top ties in with the quartz top side table across the room. Those gorgeous teak, cane back chairs reference the cane front cabinets that are the focal point of the built-in media cabinet. The cushions on those chairs won’t be black, we’ll recover them in this Peter Dunham woven fabric in the “green on natural” colorway.

Last thing I’ll mention. If you refer back to the layout at the top of this post, you’ll notice I didn’t share selections for the furniture piece between the windows or anything for the seating area along the bottom wall. That’s because I’m hoping to find some pieces at Round Top this fall that work for the space. I’m really trying to incorporate antique pieces into every room in this home. They add such character and warmth and really make a home feel lived in and personal. That being said, it takes time to source those things. I’ve already purchased some vintage decor items for the room, but it’s going to take me some time to find the perfect furniture pieces.

And there you have it! As always, I’ll share things as they happen in real time on Instagram so be sure to follow along there. Be sure to let me know what you think of the design plan in the comments below!

XOXO,

Liz
