Today’s the big day! 🥳 We’re off on our big, family RV trip as of 10:30am this morning. A few minutes later than planned, but we got everything done we needed to accomplish which is the important thing. My mom is watching our pup Louis and the house for us (thanks mom!) while we’re gone, so everything will be in good hands.

Tonight we’re headed to Seminole, Texas and every time I think about our destination I get that John Anderson song “Seminole Wind” stuck in my head! It should take us about 7 hours - in RV time - to arrive (RV time = add an hour to anything Google maps tells you). David and I are going to alternate driving every couple hours so we stay fresh. Carolina, our au pair, is traveling with us. When she arrived in the United States, she told me the two places she wanted to see were The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone and on this trip she’ll get to see both! So she’s excited. And it will be so helpful to have an extra set of hands to help with Kate.

We’ll be on the road a little over 6 weeks (47 days to be exact), driving 4,838 miles (almost to Canada and back), traveling through 8 states, and visiting 7 national parks (plus some other fun destinations along the way!). Scroll down a bit further to see our exact path, and below is a general overview of our itinerary.

OUR ITINERARY

  • Depart Austin for Seminole, TX

  • Albuquerque, NM (stopping briefly in Roswell… unfortunately, the UFO museum is closed due to COVID, but I’m excited to drive through the city nonetheless!)

  • Williams, AZ (which is along Route 66!)

  • Grand Canyon National Park

  • Page, Arizona (here we’ll rent a boat on Lake Powell, visit Horseshoe Bend, and maybe Antelope Canyon (if it’s open… TBD on whether it will be as it’s currently closed due to COVID)

  • Zion National Park

  • Yellowstone National Park

  • Grand Teton National Park

  • Glacier National Park

  • Darby Montana (this is the town where Yellowstone the TV show is filmed… we’ll of course drive by to see the Dutton Ranch!; We’ll also swim at the “Lake Como Beach Swimming Site”)

  • Jackson, Wyoming (here we’re taking a few days off of RV life and will be checking into the Four Seasons Jackson Hole)

  • Flaming Gorge Recreational Area (this is in Utah, tbh I don’t know much about it but it looks beautiful!)

  • Rocky Mountain National Park

  • Great Sand Dunes National Park

  • Red River, New Mexico

  • Lubbock, Texas

  • Depart Lubbock for Home

I’ve got all our overnight stops booked and a few things already planned. However, I ran out of time to plan our hikes and activities within the parks, so I’ll have to do some research on the road. But that’s alright! It’s probably better to look at everything right before we arrive, anyway. If any of you have recommendations for any of our destinations, feel free to reach out! All the advice I’ve gotten so far has been super helpful.

This will most likely be my last blog post until we’re home. I’m going to focus on enjoying as much time with family in nature as possible. I might get a wild hair and post a few updates here on the blog, but I’ll definitely be sharing our adventures on Instagram so be sure to follow along there.

Please keep us in your prayers for safe travels and send all the positive vibes our way! 🤪

XOXO,

Liz
